The tribal Celts, the original western European pagans, go back thousands of years. Their culture was intertwined in nature and mythology, rendering spiritual meaning to the animals and plants around them. Bear was considered a symbol of strength, power, and protection. I have chosen to render Bear in a profusion of Celtic knot work, to honor my Scots/Irish heritage. I bent a knot work line into a half circle, suggesting an ancient piece of jewelry worn by warriors and nobility: the torque. At each end of the torque there are Bear heads. The two torques, forming a circle, capture the paw of Bear. Thus symbolizing Bear’s power and strength.
